Installing the DFX USB Adapter with Stereo Sound Systems
If you are using your DFX USB Adapter for Stereo playback only, i.e. you only have stereo
speakers or headphones, setup of the adapter is very simple:
- First plug the DFX USB Adapter into a USB port on your PC.
- Then disconnect your speaker plug from the PC audio output jack and plug it into
the jack labeled Front Audio on the DFX USB Adapter.
- Your PC will now automatically setup the DFX USB Adapter as the default audio device
that will be used for all audio playback on your PC.
Suggestion: For the highest audio quality, it's best to have the Volume
control on the DFX USB Adapter turned all the way up, then use your speaker's volume
control to adjust your audio playback level. To turn the Volume all the way up
on the DFX USB Adapter, click the black VOL+ button on the right top side of the
adapter until the volume is at maximum, then adjust your speaker volume control
to set the playback level.
Installing the DFX USB Adapter with Surround Sound Speaker Systems
- Connect the Front, Rear, and Center/Sub connectors from your Surround Sound speaker
system to the Front Audio, Rear Audio and Center/Sub Woofer jacks on the DFX USB Adapter.
- Plug the DFX USB Adapter into a USB port on your PC.
- Click the START button on the lower left corner of Windows, then select Settings → Control Panel.
- Select Sounds and Audio Devices (and in XP, click on the Audio tab at the top of that panel).
- In the Playback section, click on the Configure (Advanced on XP) button at the right of the field, and in the Speaker
Setup box, select 5.1 Surround Sound Speakers and click OK to exit the dialogs.
Selecting the DFX USB Adapter as the Default Recording Device
After you have plugged the DFX USB Adapter into an active USB port on your PC, follow
the instructions below to make the DFX USB Adapter your default recording device.
- Click the START button on the lower left corner of Windows, then select
Settings → Control Panel.
- Select Sounds and Audio Devices (and in XP, click on the Audio tab at the top of that panel).
- In the Recording section, click on the arrow at the right of the field, and
select USB Audio as the default recording device. (If that device does not appear as
a selection, refer to the troubleshooting notes for the DFX USB Adapter).
Setting the Recording Input Level
- Click on the Volume button in the Recording section. At the bottom of
that panel, click the Select box next to the input you wish to use (Line or Microphone).
Then turn the Volume control all the way up for that selected input (your recording
application will also let you adjust this volume level).
- Click the X in the upper right hand corner to close the Volume panel, then click OK on
the Sounds and Audio Devices panel to apply the settings.
- Your DFX USB Adapter is now ready to make high quality recordings.

Does the DFX USB Adapter support both USB 1 and 2?
Yes, the DFX USB Adapter is fully compatible with both USB 1 and USB 2 ports. It
will function fine on PC's that only supply USB 1 ports.
Does the DFX USB Adapter have a hook-up for stereo earphones/headphones?
The DFX USB Adapter doesn't include a separate headphone jack, however you can
use a low cost "Y-adapter" such as Radio Shack's model 42-2570 to allow both
your speaker system and your headphones to be connected to the DFX USB Adapter
at the same time. Just turn your speaker off when you wish to use headphones
only.
Does the DFX USB Adapter work for stereo systems with a subwoofer?
Yes, for stereo speaker systems that include a subwoofer, those systems are
quickly connected to the DFX USB Adapter by connecting the speaker system input
cable directly to the DFX USB Adapter's output.
The DFX USB Adapter will provide substantially improved sound from both the
regular speaker and the subwoofer.
The sound improvement will be even more dramatic when the DFX Enhancer plug-in
is also used.
If you later decide to expand to a full Surround Sound system, the DFX
USB Adapter provides the required 5.1 compliant separate output for each
speaker.
Can I use the DFX USB Adapter to process input audio and record it in mixing and production applications?
Yes, the DFX USB Adapter works well with all Windows recording, mixing and production
applications such as Cakewalk Sonar, Cubase, Sound Forge, etc.
What is the difference between using the DFX USB Adapter or an onboard sound card when recording?
The DFX USB Adapter has very high recording quality that will give much better
results than using the low quality recording capabilities built in to
desktop and laptop PCs.
Is audio processed inside the DFX USB Adapter, bypassing the computer's onboard sound card?
Yes, when you use the DFX USB Adapter, all the audio conversion for both playback and
recording occurs directly in the adapter, away from the noisy digital
electronics in the desktop or laptop PC. When combined with the DFX USB
Adapter's higher quality electronics, this will give you dramatically
improved audio playback and recording quality.
Keep in mind though that the DFX USB Adapter will co-exist with your computer's
built-in audio. You can still use your computer's onboard sound card if desired by
changing the audio device preferences in the applications for which you still want
to use the sound card.
Is the DFX USB Adapter compatible with digital or USB speakers?
No. The DFX USB Adapter is only compatible with analog speakers.
Steps to troubleshoot sound issues with the DFX USB Adapter
If you are having sound issues using the DFX USB Adapter follow these troubleshooting steps:
- Double-check that you have the necessary system requirements.
- Double-check that you have the DFX USB Adapter plugged into an active USB
port. When the DFX USB Adapter is connected properly the red LED panel on the
top of the adapter will be lit.
- Double-check that you have your speakers properly connected. For stereo
speakers your speaker plug should be fully inserted into the Front Audio
jack on the front of the DFX USB Adapter.
- Most PC's will automatically set the DFX USB Adapter as the default audio
playback device. However, some PC's need this done manually.
If you don't have sound after checking points 1) and 2) above, continue with
the steps in this section to make sure that the DFX USB Adapter is selected as the
Default Sound Device on your PC.
To set the DFX USB Adapter as the default audio device:
- Click on the START button in the lower left corner of Windows, and then
select Settings → Control Panel.
- Select Sounds and Audio Devices (and in XP, select the Audio tab at the top of the panel).
- Under the Playback section, make sure USB Audio is selected as the
Default Device. If it is not selected, click the "down arrow" key next to
the current selection and then click on USB Audio. If the selection USB
Audio does not appear, see section 5 below.
- Under the Recording section, make sure USB Audio is selected as the
Default Device. If it is not selected, click the "down arrow" key next to
the current selection and then click on USB Audio. If the selection USB
Audio does not appear, see section 5 below.
- When finished setting USB Audio as the default device, click OK to apply.
- Selecting USB Audio device for playback from applications
Most applications will automatically use the default audio device for
playback and recording, so if you followed the instructions above most of
your applications will automatically use the USB Audio device. However, on
some PC's, some applications may not automatically make this setting and you
will have to set it.
For example, to check the playback device on Windows Media Player:
- On the title bar of the player, right-click to bring up the menu selection
panel and select Tools → Options
- On the dialog that appears click on the Devices tab at the top of the panel.
It will take a few seconds for the screen in this panel to fully display.
- When it completes, double-click on the Speakers entry. In the panel
that appears, under Sound Playback, make sure that DirectSound USB Audio is
selected. If it is not selected, click on the arrow at the right of the selection,
and select DirectSound USB Audio. If that selection does not appear as an option,
go to section 5) below.
- When you have completed the selection, click the OK button on that panel and
also on the Options panel to save your settings.
- Checking USB Audio Driver status
- Right-click on the My Computer icon on your desktop, and then select Manage
from the menu that appears.
- In the Computer Management dialog that appears, under System Tools, select
Device Manager. In the right panel, double-click on Sound, Video and Game controllers.
- Under Sound, Video and Game controllers, look for the entry titled USB Audio
device. If that entry doesn't appear, your DFX USB Adapter may not be plugged into a
live USB port. Try plugging the adapter into a different USB port and see if
the USB Audio entry appears. If it still doesn't appear, try rebooting the
PC, and insert the adapter. If the USB Audio device listing still doesn't
appear your DFX USB Adapter may be defective. Please contact us
for further instructions.
- If the USB Audio device was present, right-click on that listing, and select
the entry Uninstall, and click OK. Then unplug your DFX USB Adapter and plug it
back in again.
If you still don't have sound at this point, contact us for further assistance.
